Join ISSWA and ISPA for our second virtual Lunch and Learn session of the 25-26 school year, scheduled for February 2, 2026 at 11:00.  At this session, we will host Elizabeth Balcarcel, Rapid Response Community Organizer with Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice (IMMJ), who runs the ICE Reporting Hotline, which provides resources, activates a rapid response team to observe, document, and remind individuals of their rights, or activates community defense teams who step in to support families when a detainment occurs.  IMMJ's mission is "to build a movement for justice led by immigrants and refugees in Iowa by providing high-quality legal services and community empowerment through organizing." Their vision is an "Iowa that is welcoming and inclusive, where the rights of immigrants and refugees are ensured through access to legal services, their voices are heard, and the issues that impact them are addressed." At this session, you will acquire information to share with students and families regarding their rights, be asked to inquire about district policies related to student safety, learn more about how to engage in advocacy in your community as a neighbor, and gain information to support IMMJ legislative actions for the 2026 session.

This session will be recorded and shared with registrants in case you are unable to attend the event live. Subject to change pending consent of speakers.

    DAY AT THE CAPITOL

Join us for our 7th Annual Day at the Capitol, presented by the Iowa School Social Workers’ Association and the Iowa School Psychologists Association! A Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity for us to come together and share with state lawmakers about how we address student barriers to learning and academic success in cost-effective ways. This is a professional development opportunity, not a political lobby day.  This year our Keynote Speaker is Jordan Mix from Iowa Safe Schools, speaking on Hope Is a Practice: Supporting Students When the System Falters. When laws shift and protections erode, it can feel as though the ground beneath our work is no longer steady. For Iowa’s school social workers and psychologists, SF 496 has introduced new barriers to ethical, student-centered care—especially for LGBTQ youth. This keynote offers space to name that grief and frustration while also reclaiming hope as an intentional, collective practice. Attendees will leave with practical strategies for supporting LGBTQ students and a renewed sense of purpose. A better Iowa is still possible—but only if those who believe in it remain engaged, present, and willing to lead through uncertainty.

The ISSWA/ISPA Day at the Capitol will be on March 4, 7:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Day at the Capitol event details and agenda may be found here. Register for this event by February 27, 4:00 pm.

We strongly recommend participants attend the Legislative Panel Discussion and Coaching & Collaboration Session to prepare for the Day at the Capitol Event.
